Week 1 Winners and Losers

Winner: Everyone

For not picking up Mat Latos! CBS declared it as possible "the worst season-beginning debut in baseball history." Nice Job everyone!

Read more about how bad it was here: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/25139774/the-historical-context-of-mat-latos-dreadful-marlins-debut

Making this more interesting, Tristan Cockroft of ESPN.com predicted a great start from Latos, and after the horrific outing, ESPN removed the video!

Loser: People who drafted the following: Jennry Mejia, Latroy Hawkins, Brett Cecil, Betances, Joaquin Benoit, Joe Nathan, and maybe more that I didn't hear about!

The closer carousel strikes again! Especially for our friend Mejia, for getting suspended 80 games without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol!

Stanozo - LOL!

Richie Blasts 5 homers, Wins Day 1 Championship

Time to crown the winner of the most brag-worthy award in the league, the day 1 championship. With a staggering offensive line of 10-5-10-.378-1, Richie jumped out to a 7-2 lead over Russ and takes home the prestigious honor of being a huge douche.

John also had a big offensive day with a 10-3-10-.349-0 line, he's up 7-1 early on Dan. Brad enjoyed 2 homers from Pedroia and leads Mark 5-3.

Eric, Pflanz and Perk all had great days on the mound and all lead in their respective matchups.

Commish Guilt-Trips League Asking "Why am I even doing this?

I asked everyone on Friday to send me ranks! How hard is it to list 11 people's names!!!!?!?!?!!?!? I've posted something here nearly every day. the least you can do is send me a list of 11 names.

Thank you Pflanz, Scanlon, and Eric. I won't write anything negative about your teams for 72 hours I promise.

Perk, Scanlon, Andy win season's first FAAB bidding wars

We saw 3 players get multiple bids this past weekend leading up to the first FAAB auction of the regular season.

Perka was able to nab Brad Boxberger for $3, beating out Scanlon's free bid. Boxberger is slated to be the Rays interim close while Jake McGee recovers. With Chapman, Betances, and Rodney, Perka shouldn't be spending too much of his budget on additional sources for saves. However, any time you can block your current weekly opponent from improving a weak area, it's a pleasant surprise.

The Kimbrel trade may have thrown dirt on Scanlon's already buried saves category, as the recent Padres acquisition will usurp the closer spot from Jeremy's only real closer, Joaquin Benoit.  But Scanlon was quick on the trigger and dropped a $5 spot on Jason Grilli, Kimbrel's likely replacement in Atlanta. You might remember Grilli's name from the highly unreliable stint he had as the Pirates closer not long ago. Jeremy beat out $1 from both the Travers brothers to get the potential closer, but saves is still a weak category for him, and he will struggle with saves until he can get a solid bullpen.

Andy also dropped $5 in the first regular season auction on Jhonny Peralta, who hit cleanup for the Cardinals last night in the victory. Unfortunately he went just 1 for 5, but the Cards have an efficient lineup and anyone in the middle of that order should be considered an asset. Andy beat out a $1 bid from Mark, and now (along with Jose Reyes) has 2 shortstops with significant upside, if there are any buyers out there...

Unnecessary payments include Russ spending $5 on the Red Sox "Ace" Clay Buchholz. He has no good defense for this, and is, at heart, a homer.

Also Perka spends $4 on Josh Hamilton, but will end up stashing him away on the DL until February.

Russ was also able to nab Curtis Granderson and Josh Collmenter, all while dropping no one, because he currently has 5 guys on the 15 day DL. "I have 4 pitchers on the DL and I'm concerned about hitting the innings minimum, so I grabbed a couple of opening day starting pitchers. It probably won't end well for my ratios..." he said to himself earlier today. This may be a nice first week for Richie.

Can't wait to see how these pick-ups affect week 1.

Pre-season Report Card: Defense

AS promised, here are the defensive grades/ranks:

Pre-Season Report Card: Offense

Hoping to do a little write-up explaining some of these grades (will probably post before opening night), but here is my initial feeling on the strength of each team's offense in each of our categories. I used some projections/rankings, but as always, it's mostly my biased and unfair judgment.
Defense will be posted later this afternoon.

Fee Shaming

According to my records, the following managers still owe money:

The two usual candidates: Greg and Andy

The two "we wouldn't be friends with you if you didn't have cool brothers" members: Eric and Richie
